Sifter boxes, also called kief boxes, pollen boxes, or pollen sifters, are wooden boxes made to separate fine kief from dry herb using a mesh screen. Instead of relying only on a grinder’s kief catcher, a sifter box gives you more surface area to gently rub, shake, or massage flower across the screen. As the herb moves over the mesh, the tiny resin glands known as trichomes fall through into the collection chamber below. This leaves you with a layer of fine, powdery kief that can be collected, stored, or added to your smoking setup.

Most wooden sifter boxes use a multi-piece design with a top storage or work area, a fine mesh screen, and a bottom collection tray. Many quality kief boxes use mesh around the 80–125 micron range, which helps separate finer material while limiting larger plant matter from falling through. Some styles include a glass or mirror collection plate at the bottom to make scraping up kief easier, while others feature magnetic lids, sliding drawers, or built-in rolling tray sections. How to Use a Sifter Box

To use a kief sifter box, place a small amount of dry herb on top of the mesh screen and gently move it around with your fingers, a card, or a soft tool. The goal is not to grind the flower aggressively, but to loosen the trichomes so they can fall through the screen into the lower chamber. A light shake or gentle rolling motion can also help the kief separate without forcing too much plant material through the mesh. After sifting, lift or slide out the collection tray and use a scraper card or small tool to gather the fine kief.

For best results, use dry, well-cured flower and avoid overfilling the screen. Working in smaller batches usually gives cleaner results and makes it easier to control how much plant material passes through. Some users place their herb in the freezer briefly before sifting because colder trichomes can break away more easily, but the box should still be handled gently. Cleaning the screen between uses also helps keep airflow open and prevents old plant matter from mixing into fresh kief.
